Application Summary

The project forms a partnership between the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) and University of the Western Cape (UWC) and builds on a 2017-19 Utforsk project (“Teaching indices as mathematical models and as entry points to critical discussions - Design and research of a teaching toolkit to be used in teacher education”) where the project coordinators and some of the participants in the current project were involved. We address two educational challenges through developing toolkits on teaching mathematics for sustainable development and productive practice, tools that are almost non-existing in the academic literature and meet a challenge in Norway (NO) and South Africa (SA). The toolkits emphasise student engagement and motivation, and the project contributes to the long-term aim of making students complete schooling in SA where mathematics is a gatekeeper. Addressing these two challenges answers to the SDG4 & SDG8 from Agenda 2030 on quality teaching and work for all students. Aims will be achieved by

1. Jointly developing research-based toolkits to be used in courses to enhance teachers’ competences for teaching mathematics for sustainable development & productive practice
2. Joint research and publications on the design and implementation of toolkits
3. Student and staff exchange, international perspectives to teacher education programs
4. Involving master (MA) and PhD students in an international research community
The main activities are project meetings, research seminars with researchers and students, joint writing, guest lectures, development of tools and student mobility.
Results include research-based toolkits, joint research publications, internationalization of MA and PhD courses through student mobility and student research theses. The long-term aim is to establish more mobility windows for students at our institutions.
